A comprehensive landscape design and maintenance project for the Protea Hotel in Franschhoek — one of the Cape Winelands' most celebrated hospitality destinations.

The brief required a landscape that complemented the hotel's elegant colonial architecture while creating a lush, immersive outdoor experience for guests. The private pool area, formal hedge borders, and planted terraces were all designed to feel both curated and naturalistic.

A considered residential landscape created for Huis Roos at Oakview Boutique Estate in Johannesdal — where indigenous planting, water features, and naturalistic design come together to form a deeply connected outdoor environment.

The design draws on the natural character of the site — incorporating a living water feature with papyrus, a bonsai deck collection, wildflower meadow planting, and textured ornamental grasses — creating a landscape that feels both curated and alive.

The landscape approach was shaped around creating a calm, immersive outdoor environment that enhances both private living and guest experience. Soft planting, considered garden edges, open lawn areas, and natural textures work together to frame views, soften built elements, and strengthen the connection between architecture, water, and landscape.

A hospitality landscape shaped around the relaxed charm of La Brasserie Farm — home to Hey Joe Brewery & Co — where outdoor experience, guest arrival, and natural farm character come together.

The landscape approach focuses on creating welcoming, functional grounds that support the brewery and hotel environment, while enhancing the sense of place that makes the farm setting so memorable.

Layered planting, open lawn areas, shaded gathering spaces, and carefully maintained edges work together to create a landscape that feels both relaxed and refined — suited to long afternoons, shared tables, and the easy rhythm of hospitality in the Winelands.

A Cape Dutch Estate, Reimagined

Set against the mountains of the Franschhoek valley, Oakvale Estate is a private Cape Dutch manor surrounded by working vineyards, formal gardens, and a series of carefully composed outdoor rooms. The landscape was developed as a unified estate vision — measured, layered, and built to mature.

The design moves between formality and softness: twin parterre rose gardens and intricate knot gardens anchor the central axis, while a reflecting pond, swimming pond, octagonal folly, and tree-lined drives create moments of pause and arrival. An autumn palette of poplars and ornamental pears frames every long view.

Beyond the formal gardens, the estate accommodates a productive kitchen garden, equestrian lunging ring, tennis and padel courts, and quiet seating spaces — all integrated with the rhythm of the working vineyard. The result is an environment that functions equally well for private family life and refined boutique hospitality.
